VUCA – pretty much sums it up

Maybe you already know this term—VUCA.  But I just learned it, and thought it was worth sharing.

VUCA, according to Wikipedia, “is an acronym used to describe or reflect on the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of general conditions and situations. The common usage of the term VUCA began in the late 1990s and derives from military vocabulary and has been subsequently used in emerging ideas in strategic leadership that apply in a wide range of organizations…..”

VUCA—I’ll remember that.  In just four letters it says a great deal about the world in which we live.

Laurie – greetings from Australia! VUCA indeed sums up the world in which we live. It also highlights a great gap (I think chasm is a more appropriate term) in the way we train and develop our managers to cope with these critical factors. The capability of senior executives to manage volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity effectively is reflected in organisation outcomes – and I suspect in the emotional and in the mental health of the executive team.

You may be half way around the world, Les, but it sounds to me like we our organizations are facing nearly identical challenges!
