“For-Benefit” Corporations
A bill being considered by the Vermont Senate would create a new legal classification for companies in that state. If passed, corporations that have social missions could actually codify those values and be designated “for-benefit” corporations (instead of “for-profit.”) A recent Business Week article explored the implications of this bill (and similar bills pending in other states) that would make it easier to formalize values in business.

Mike … As a supporting concept, I’m researching how to develop a “discussion group” on public-private partnerships for So. Calif.
Typically, PPP has been thought of as a way to finance a construction project. However, in my 1st pass on the research I’m finding that there can be “service delivery” PPPs, such as (but not limited to) … child care & library operations in Riverside County, CA; Emergency medical services in areas north of San Francisco; I understand the City of Anaheim has implemented PPP to help economic redevelopment & provide low cost housing. Perhaps there are already techniques in place that address the underlying Vermont premise.
Other PPP concepts could support construction installation / operations of govt data systems; new schools, fire / police facilities; convention / municipal music facilities … etc.
Further, folks in the UK have been (are) developing case studies to describe how over 900 PPPs have been (are) working for the last 15 yrs or so. … Maybe there’s no need to “re-invent the wheel” … just smooth it up a bit …
